The Foundation believes in the interdependence of people and their natural environment which they are a part of. Witnessing the social, ecological and economic consequences of their exploitation which is driven by the extractivist logics of global capitalism, the foundation nurtures approaches and practices that embodies this interconnectedness and act as places that carry and sustain life.

The Foundation supports initiatives spread across multiple territories that were made vulnerable from social injustice, environmental degradation or political instabilities. It engages with producers who implement ethical models for the production and circulation of goods, materials and knowledge. It is attentive to practices that nurture and attempts to repair the relationships between land and the people, both ensuring the land is treated with care and that resources that it provided are reseeding of spaces from which they were extracted. Guided by the principle of the circular economy, minimal waste and recycling, the Carved to Flow Foundation builds an alternative ecosystem of care.

Founded in 2018 by the artist Otobong Nkanga, the Carved to Flow Foundation is a non-profit organization operating as a support structure for people, land and knowledge. Based in Nigeria, on the artist’s native land, and in Belgium, where she lives, it is informed by the principles, questions and research that run through and shape her practice.
